English as a Second Language (ESL) courses closely approximate undergraduate courses in teaching style, content, and expectations. The curriculum is designed to assist students in the development of essential language skills, appropriate learning strategies, and the cross-cultural awareness and sensitivities considered necessary for successful completion of their undergraduate or graduate studies.
IELTS and TOEFL preparation courses are offered as part of the regular curriculum.
Academic English Studies (AES) is the intensive English language program at Lewis & Clark in Portland, Oregon. Lewis & Clark is a private, liberal-arts school with a global perspective. Our intensive English program offers classes from low intermediate through advanced English levels. We are known for engaging, thought-provoking content-based courses that are very much like undergraduate-level classes in the US.
Our program offers a pathway program: students accepted to the Lewis & Clark undergraduate program may earn up to 24 credits towards their degree with AES classes. We also appeal to students preparing for a degree program at other schools, graduate students, students on a study abroad or gap year, career professionals wanting increased English proficiency, and English language teachers wanting professional development courses.
By engaging students and faculty with the greater Lewis & Clark campus and Portland communities, AES supports Lewis & Clark’s commitment to diversity and inclusion as essential to creating an ideal learning environment.
