Intensive English Program

‎‎Whether you want to improve your English to pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree at an American university or want to study English for personal or professional reasons, the full-time intensive English Language Program (IEP) can help you. There are 5 terms in an academic year, each lasting 8 weeks. Students enrolled in the full-time program take 4 courses, 2 times a week, for a total of 20 hours a week. With 6 levels, the program will prepare you for personal, academic, and professional success. If you are coming from outside the U.S.,you can apply for your F-1 student visa when enrolled in this program, and you will have many opportunities to familiarize yourself with American culture. For students interested in attending a degree program at Sacred Heart, after achieving Level 6 English language proficiency provisional letters of acceptance are available and there is no need to take the TOEFL test.

Courses The Intensive English Program includes four courses: Grammar, Listening and Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

Grammar This course emphasizes immediate application of grammatical forms and meanings. A variety of exercises will be used to practice sentence patterns, clauses, verbs, and other written forms. This class is an intensive use of grammar exercises.

Listening and Speaking This course works toward strengthening the students’ necessary language and preparation skills, in order to develop their confidence in oral communications. Students have the flexibility to use their own interest area or business concentration as subject matter. The course also concentrates on speaking clearly and accurately. All aspects of the language are addressed: sounds, stress, rhythms and intonations. Students will practice and understand English pronunciation and learn to communicate fluently by reducing their own accent.

Reading This course implements contemporary fiction and non-fiction as a base upon which to build on the students’ reading comprehension, vocabulary and ability to discuss ideas. The students are expected to understand the written material and respond verbally and in writing.

Writing This course is designed to improve sentence clarity and paragraph organization. Through editing and focusing on revision strategies, students will work toward a complete text which will integrate and document academic sources.

Orientation At the start of the program, during registration week, you will attend a mandatory program orientation. During this orientation you will receive information about the campus, the culture, and the expectations as a student. You will also have a chance to meet other ELI students.

ESL Online

‌‌‌The SHU English Language Institute at Sacred Heart University offers a fully online English language program of study. Our online program is a complete four-level English language course available to students either in the United States or internationally. This program allows students to learn ESL entirely online.

What the Online Program Offers: -The program is fully online – including placement testing, registration, payment, all coursework, and full access to an instructor.* -The program offers individualized learning plans based on placement testing. -The program is available to students nationally and internationally. -Students can work from home or anywhere they can access the internet. -Students can complete their course work any time of the day. -Students gain full acceptance to the English Language Institute at Sacred Heart University.** -Upon completion of all necessary courses, students will receive an SHU -Certificate of Completion and gain eligibility to apply for conditional acceptance to SHU’s undergraduate and graduate programs. -Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to take the TOEFL or similar exam.
