ECU Language Academy

ECULA offers a very focused, skills-based program, with separate classes devoted to the main English language skills: grammar and writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Classes meet for two hours, on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday or Tuesday-Thursday schedule. Total contact hours for core classes is 20 hours per week.

In addition to the core courses are additional courses, both required and optional.

Required courses include a weekly film series and our pronunciation laboratory, guided by professional speech pathologists from ECU’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Optional courses include a First Friends program, partnering you with another international student for fun social activities, and free tutoring when available.

The program is structured on five levels, from beginner to advanced. Students enter the program at whatever level is appropriate for their English skill. They spend one semester in each level and, on successful completion of an end-of-term exam, move up to the next level or graduate the program.
