Description

Welcome to the Community Language Program (CLP). The CLP is a unique and integral part of the TESOL and Applied Linguistics Programs at Teachers College, Columbia University. It provides quality and low-cost English and foreign language instruction to adult learners of diverse nationalities and backgrounds in the Columbia University and surrounding New York communities.

In addition, the CLP serves as an on-site language education lab in which TESOL and Applied Linguistics faculty and students enrolled in the masters and doctoral program teach the courses and use the CLP as a setting for empirical inquiry. With observation and classroom, the CLP gains insight into how efficient teaching might take place. Thus, the CLP provides a fertile ground for a continuous synergy between teaching practice and theory.

The Community English Program (CEP) is a program within the CLP dedicated to teaching English as a Second Language. Teachers College students teach in the CEP as part of their practical training. TC students can teach in the CEP by registering for one of the teaching practica offered each semester in the TESOL/AL department. In addition to teaching, the practica students meet once a week for a seminar with their professor.
