Computer Systems Institute offers a number of English and professional programs at the Skokie campus.

ESL programs are designed for learners who wish to improve their English language skills or prepare to enter a U.S. college or university. ESL programs are for English learners of any skill level. Courses cover vocabulary and conversation, writing and grammar, and reading strategies.

Academic ESL programs are for students with advanced English proficiency who want to hone their skills in writing, literature, or communication through advanced-level courses.

Skill Building programs offer career-oriented students an opportunity to gain practical training in the customer service, hospitality, or business administration field. Skill Building programs all include externships as a core component of each course.

The CS Foundation program is also offered at the Skokie campus.This program prepares students for careers in high-growth fields.

Beginner ESL

In Beginner ESL, students learn the basics of communicating in English. Students are guided by instructors while practicing fundamental language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In lecture and lab classes, students are taught how to use new grammar and vocabulary to describe simple, “everyday” topics and to become comfortable interacting with classmates, teachers, and native English speakers. Students with placement exam scores of 0-50 are placed in Beginner ESL.

Intermediate ESL

English learners at the Intermediate level build on their existing language skills in reading and listening, and focus on more accurately expressing themselves in writing and conversation. In lecture and lab classes, students gain knowledge that will help them become more confident interacting in a variety of situations at a proficient level. After successfully completing Intermediate ESL, students have further program options, such as the Academic and Skill Building Programs. Students with placement exam scores of 51-76 are placed in Intermediate ESL.

Advanced ESL

Advanced-level students are taught how to use higher level vocabulary in writing and conversation and are able to discuss complex topics. Advanced ESL students use critical thinking skills to engage in in-depth discussions on a wide range of subjects; they also learn conversational and idiomatic language that allows them to interact more naturally with native speakers. Upon completing this class, students are prepared to enter a variety of courses. Students with placement exam scores of 77-90 are placed in Advanced ESL.

General Writing Program

The General Writing Program includes three courses which explore different types of composition: Different Writing Styles, Writing for Work, and Writing Student Newspaper. The program will help students develop the critical thinking skills and writing strategies needed to design professional documents, to write clearly, and to develop persuasive arguments. Classes will focus on rhetoric and sentence structure through writing and revising academic essays, articles, and business documents. Upon successful completion of the program, students will gain a variety of appropriate writing and editing skills for a diverse range of professions.

Literature Program

The Literature Program consists of three academic courses that introduce cultural and historical aspects of the U.S. through literature: Discovering Fiction, Discovering Short Stories, and America through Academic Readings. These courses teach students reading comprehension techniques, introduce them to different types of reading material, and give them the strategies they need to prepare for college-level reading, writing, and discussion. Additionally, students continue to build their academic vocabulary and study advanced grammar topics relevant to effective reading and writing. By using academic vocabulary and critical thinking skills in a discussion forum, students communicate their ideas about American literature both orally and in writing.

Communication Program

The Communication Program consists of three courses that develop academic communication skills: The Art of Storytelling, Small Group Discussion, and Interpersonal Communication. The program emphasizes student participation in interviews, speeches, class presentations, debates, and group discussions to supplement the learning of organizational problem solving, decision making, and leadership skills. These courses also emphasize the importance of verbal and non-verbal social cues and signals in different cultures, international communication, and formal speaking. Upon successful completion of the program, students learn how to speak easily in front of the class, in small groups, and one-on-one with other students.

The Customer Service Specialist program offers advanced development and training in professional and business-related skills. Students learn core competencies of customer relationship management through techniques that teach them to assess, assist, and meet the needs of customers. All four courses of the program – Customer Relationship Management, Call Center, Case Studies in Customer Service‡, and Customer Service as a Career – will focus on customer service and professional business skills.

The Administrative Assistant Professional (AAP) program aims to equip students with necessary administrative skills needed to succeed in an office environment. The one-year program aims to provide students with imperative knowledge about proper professional behavior in an office environment, management of electronic files, and handling of correct office procedures.

The Sales and Marketing Professional (SMP) program is a one-year program that focuses on a wide array of business topics, theories, and practices. The SMP program consists of five courses: Introduction to Small Business Administration, Social Media Marketing, Communication for Sales, Consumer Psychology, and an externship course. The program assists students in honing the following skills: public speaking, interpersonal communication, sales operations, customer relations, and technical skills (such as digital marketing). Each course that composes the SMP program awards the student with a complete understanding of the sales and marketing world and prepares them to enter the field as a well-read professional.
