The University of Kansas is located in Lawrence, a small, friendly midwestern city (population 71,000) located in the hills of northeast Kansas. Nearby is Kansas City (population 1.5 million), a 45-minute drive away, and Topeka, the capital city of Kansas, which is 30 minutes away by car. The Applied English Center (AEC), founded in 1964, provides intensive English instruction and ESL courses, preparing students and scholars for study in American universities, and helping students, scholars, and visitors participate in American society. Specialized programs provide tailored instruction for sponsored groups. Academic and cultural orientation is an integral pair of language instruction. At the University of Kansas, the AEC helps internationalize the campus through the participation of its faculty, students, and staff in all areas of campus life.
Students interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree can apply for admission based on their academic preparation, with no TOEFL score required. Students take the English proficiency test upon arrival and will take ESL courses if needed. Students interested in pursuing a graduate program may be admitted with 520 TOEFL as conditional students in most departments. 570 TOEFL is required for regular admission in most graduate programs; a few graduate programs require 600 TOEFL.
