The Intensive English Institute (IEI) provides the best possible opportunities for students who want to improve their English language proficiency for academic, personal or professional purposes. Since its beginning in 1967, the IEIs academic focus has helped thousands of students develop the language skills they need to earn an undergraduate or graduate degree at the University of Illinois or elsewhere. The IEI also serves students who want to improve their English skills to enhance their professional careers, as well as students interested in a study-abroad experience to learn American English and culture for their own personal enjoyment. Our program offers 20 hours per week of in-class instruction by well-qualified faculty in two, fifteen-week sessions: the fall semester (August-December), and spring semester (January to May). A shorter eight-week summer session is also available from June through August. Classes focus on the development of academic and general English skills. The IEI has 6 levels of proficiency, from basic to advanced. Students can choose elective classes at the intermediate and advanced levels.
