Columbus, Ohio is the capital city, the largest city in the state and the 15th largest city in the U.S. Columbus has many ethnic restaurants and grocery stores, wonderful music and art attractions, professional soccer and hockey teams, and beautiful metro parks.

Capital University's ESL program prepares non-native English speakers to be successful in academic degree programs at U.S. universities and in their professional careers. Students develop their English language skills in all areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. Test-taking and academic strategies are also emphasized.

Classes are offered at the elementary, intermediate, high-intermediate, and advanced proficiency levels. Full-time study entails four hours of classes daily, Monday through Friday. Teachers are native speakers of English with advanced degrees and substantial teaching experience.

Upon arrival, students are tested in order to place them in the most appropriate instructional level. Students who begin with very low English skills may study for a year or more.

A program of social activities complements the academic curriculum.

Student Services

Students may join university clubs and intramural sports teams to be involved in university life. A comprehensive International Office provides airport pick-up to those who live on-campus, orientation, and on going support. Students may also use the Campus Health Center for general health care needs. Local field trips are held during each 8 week term.

Additional Services

Students are tested during orientation to determine placement level in either Basic, Intermediate or the Advance level. Students are in 20 hours of instruction per week, Monday through Friday. Instructors have advanced degrees in TESOL or related field. Students utilize a language lab as part of the instruction and have the opportunity to have a U.S. conversation partner.

Capital University is a small, private, comprehensive university with 80 undergraduate majors, an M.B.A. program and graduate programs in Law, Nursing and Music Education.
