The Intensive English Language Center (IELC), located on the campus of California State University, Bakersfield, offers an intensive American language program designed to prepare students for successful academic study in the United States. The non-credit program offers courses to improve the reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills (including pronunciation) of students for academic and everyday living purposes. In addition, classes are offered in American culture, study skills and TOEFL/GMAT preparation, along with a wide variety of other interesting courses.

The family setting provides a great opportunity for students to learn about American traditions and customs, while encouraging students to practice informal English with native speakers. Dormitory housing is also available on the university campus. Although space is very limited, living on campus provides students opportunities to develop a variety of social relationships and to have the convenience of university facilities. Many students enjoy apartment living while attending IELC. The university is surrounded by many moderately priced apartments which are within walking distance of the campus and shopping.
