UT Austin is one of the top public universities in the US, and is currently ranked one of the top 30 universities in the world. Our university is known for having top 20 programs in business, education, engineering, law, and pharmacy. UT Austin is ranked number one in accounting and Latin American History.

The English Language Center has been offering high quality English training services since 1965. There are two unique programs, the English Language Program (ELP) and Academic English Program (AEP). ELP is appropriate for students who are preparing for undergraduate study in the US, as well as for students who wish to improve their English for personal or professional reasons. AEP is designed for students who already have a bachelor’s degree and are preparing for a master’s or Ph.D. program.

All of the English Langauge Center's current instructors have graduate degrees, speak at least one foreign language and have taught, traveled, or lived outside the US. Every instructor has experience working in International Education, with many boasting more than 20 years of experience.

Outside of class make friends through our weekly social events and conversation groups and explore the beautiful city of Austin. Austin is the capital of Texas, and is consistently ranked as one of the top ten cities in the US to live. It is currently the 11th largest city in the US, with a population of approximately 950,000 within the 600 square kilometer city limits. While having the amenities of a large North American city, Austin, especially the university area, retains the atmosphere of a much smaller town. The natural beauty of Austin has been preserved in 17,000 acres (68 sq. km) of green space and 220 parks, offering a wealth of settings for swimming, cycling, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Austin is also known as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” There are over 150 live music venues in and around Austin, featuring every type of music imaginable.

English Language Program (ELP)

ELP is for students who want to expand their English for communication, study, business, or pleasure. ELP students include undergraduates, visiting scholars, business people, and family members of UT faculty and students. ELP students can choose intensive or part-time study, depending on their visa status. ELP offers 7 levels of instruction, from beginning to advanced.

Academic English Program (AEP)

AEP is for students who already hold at least a bachelor's degree and are planning to enter a master's or Ph.D. program. AEP offers 4 levels of instruction, from low intermediate to advanced. Students refine their English skills and prepare for graduate study by practicing a variety of academic tasks, including: reading authentic materials, writing documented research papers, giving presentation, leading discussions, understanding lectures, and attending colloquia.

Test Preparation

We offer 6-week preparation classes for TOEFL (iBT), IELTS, and GRE. These courses may be taken along with our intensive programs, or may be taken by themselves, depending on visa status. Please note that we cannot issue immigration documents for test preparation study only.

International Academy

This four-week program is designed for university-level students to improve their English and experience The University of Texas at Austin. Students will study oral and written communication along with discipline-related coursework in one of eight available tracks: accounting, engineering, software engineering, petroleum engineering, educational psychology, teacher training, English language & culture, or advertising & public relations. The program exposes international students to university research, resources, labs, and facilities through curriculum that focuses on hands-on, problem-solving, and application. Additionally, students will attend related educational excursions, cultural activities, and tours in Texas. This program will be offered annually every mid-January and July.
