Program Description

The English as a Second Language Program was established in 1970 as part of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. The mission of the ESL Program is to provide intensive English language instruction and academic training for international students who intend to enter American universities or improve their ability to use English for professional purposes. International students from all over the world choose this university-based program for its excellent teaching and outstanding student services. The Xavier University intensive English program meets professional standards in the field of ESL, and holds institutional memberships in The American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP) and The Association of International Educators (NAFSA). All instructors have Masters degrees and several years of experience teaching ESL. Levels of Instruction Four levels of intensive English instruction are offered: High Beginning, Intermediate, High Intermediate and Advanced. It is assumed that students will have had some English instruction prior to enrollment. Students are tested when they arrive and placed accordingly. Full-time students are in daytime classes, Monday through Friday, for a total of 20 to 26 hours per week. The University has 6,450 students, including 3,250 full-time undergraduates. In addition to the ESL Program, the University offers 67 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate programs, including an accredited MBA program.
