The Applied English Center (AEC) at the University of Kansas has offered English language classes to students and scholars from all parts of the world since 1964. One of the first 12 intensive English programs in the United States, the AEC welcomes students at all levels of proficiency, preparing them for study in American universities and helping them participate in American society.

The University of Kansas is located in Lawrence, a safe, affordable, friendly Midwestern town with a population of 90,000. Lawrence is known for unique shopping experiences, international cuisine, and a thriving arts and music scene. Lawrence is located in the forested hills of northeast Kansas. 45 minutes away by car is Kansas City (pop. 1.5 million), and Topeka, the capital of Kansas, is 30 minutes away by car. The nearest airport is Kansas City International Airport.

The Applied English Center is a proud member of EnglishUSA, University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) and the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) which promotes and supports ethical and professional standards for intensive English programs in the U.S; ensure that students receive the most advanced methods communicates and champions the value of English language study; enhances the visibility of member programs; and fosters professional development among members.

Each program has a custom-tailored curriculum and orientation program. Unique field trips, cultural enrichment activities, visits to local schools, businesses, and community groups, housing arrangements, and transportation and cross-cultural advising services are included with each program.

The length of time you study at the AEC depends upon your level of English when you arrive, the speed at which you learn, and your willingness to study hard. Some students take only one or two AEC courses and move into regular KU classes after one semester. Other students spend one or two semesters as full-time AEC students, and then two or more semesters as part-time AEC students. Progression through the AEC is determined by the successful completion of student learning outcomes for each course.
