Program Description

The Intensive English as a Second Language Program at the Monterey Institute of International Studies helps you learn English for school, for business, and for everyday life. You will join classmates and teachers from many different countries to learn about American life and language. The small classes emphasize interaction and effective communication in a friendly, personal setting. All of the instructors in the program hold Masters degrees in the teaching of a second language, and are committed, energetic professionals.

International House Students in the Intensive ESL program may apply to live in the International House. An English-speaking Resident Assistant helps students with their questions and concerns about daily living. Students share fully furnished one- and two- bedroom apartments located in a building next to the school. International House apartments are a five-minute walk from the restaurants, banks, theaters and shops of downtown Monterey. Homestay Family Placement Another option for ESL students is to live with an American family in or near Monterey. We will help you arrange your family homestay with a private placement agency in Monterey.

Monterey is a small, safe, coastal town in Central California located about 100 miles south of San Francisco and 300 miles north of Los Angeles. Monterey is famous for its local history and is a popular tourist and business destination. Popular attractions include the Monterey Peninsula's Cannery Row shopping district, the world class golf courses of Pebble Beach, and the incredible natural scenery of Carmel and Big Sur. Monterey is a great place to be a student of English and American culture!

DIRECTIONS FOR APPLYING TO THE ESL PROGRAM 1. Print out the PDF application form which can be downloaded from the MIIS IESL website in PDF format. Answer all questions on the application and mail it along with other supporting documentation and fees (see below) to the Intensive Language Studies Department. 2. Provide a Certificate of Financial Responsibility (bank statement), showing that you or your sponsor has enough money to support you during your studies in Monterey. Refer to the estimated fee schedule on the second page of the application for details. 3. Mail the application forms, with payment* of US $200.00. ($50.00 non-refundable application fee and $150.00 non-refundable tuition deposit). If the US Consulate or Embassy does not authorize a visa, students may request a refund of their $150.00 non-refundable tuition deposit by contacting ILST and providing proof of visa denial. If you want to pay by credit card, please complete the authorization on the second page of the application form. 4. When we receive your application, the financial document, and the fee payment, we will send you an I-20 form and acceptance letter. Students outside the United States should take the acceptance letter, the Form I-20, a valid passport, and other supporting documents to the nearest US Consulate to apply for a student visa (not a tourist visa). Students already in the United States who are transferring from another school should bring their validated Form I-20(s) with them to the Monterey Institute and present it to the International Admission Officer for processing. Students may postpone their arrival and use the tuition deposit for enrollment in a later session (up to one year) if they are unable to arrive for the session indicated on the application form.
