The Intensive English Language Program is 11 weeks long and includes 20 hours of classroom instruction per week. Many opportunities for individual study in the state-of-the-art media center and computer and language labs are also part of the curriculum. In addition, full-time students meet regularly for informal conversation and social activities with a Northeastern conversation partner. The ELC has five levels of instruction: I (beginner), II (low intermediate), III (intermediate), IV (high intermediate), and V (advanced).

ELC students may apply to live in a university dormitory during the summer term only. Alternatives to university housing include renting a nearby room or apartment or arranging a homestay with an American family.

Northeastern University is located in the center of Boston on the east coast of the United States. The ELC is in the center of the main campus, near many of the city's most famous social, cultural and educational institutions. Within walking distance are the Museum of Fine Art, and the cafes and shops of Copley Place, the Prudential Center and Newbury Street.
