Division of English as a Foreign Language

Program Description

Two 16-week semester courses are offered during the academic year from August to May. Special "American Language and Culture" courses are offered beginning in January. An 8-week and a 3-week course offered in the summer. EFL Language classes meet Monday through Friday between 9:15 a.m. and 4:05 p.m. for a total of 20 instructional hours per week. Additional homework and laboratory assignments as well as participation in campus events require students' full participation throughout the day. The EFL program offers semester courses at five levels, basic, low intermediate, intermediate, high intermediate and advanced. Advanced level students planning to attend U.S. universities are enrolled in a special course that orients them to the procedures and expectations of U.S. academic institutions and refines their language skills in areas such as academic listening and note taking, classroom discussion strategies, seminar strategies and formal academic presentations, academic writing projects and field, library and electronic media research skills. Students enrolled in Advanced English for Professional Purposes focus on listening effectively and accurately at conferences, in meetings, and at the work site, speaking accurately and appropriately in formal and informal work settings, making oral presentations to professional working groups, writing formal reports, letters, and memos, and gathering and utilizing information about specialized fields through interviews and on library based research. Traditional class activities for all levels are balanced with field work to assure that students test their language skills in the greater university community and among businesses, U.S. government agencies and international organizations in the Washington, D.C., area.
